Nilit Plastics, one of the world’s largest polyamide compounders, is responding to demand for sophisticated thermoplastic compounds in the Chinese market. It is increasing its local production capacity, and introducing new families of high performance polyamides that can be delivered in formulations tailor-made for particular applications, even in small and medium-sized quantities.

The company will be discussing its enhanced capabilities at Chinaplas 2016 in Shanghai from April 25 to 28. Nilit Plastics will be on Stand L51 in Hall N1, the principal materials hall. The stand will be staffed by a strong team of commercial and technical experts at all times. Seminars on key developments will be held on the stand throughout the duration of the exhibition.

Nilit Plastics introduced to new families of compounds, FRIANYL XTand NILAMID XS, to the Chinese market several months ago. “We are now marketing both of these new ranges and we already have several customers successfully processing the materials” says Shay Kastoriano, General Manager of Nilit Plastics China.

FRIANYL XT high performance halogen-free flame retardant polyphthalamide (PPA) compounds are for electrical and electronic applications, while NILAMID XS highly reinforced compounds for metal replacement are based on polyamides that have low moisture absorption and enable production of parts with particularly smooth surfaces.

Nilit Plastics last year installed its third compounding line in Suzhou to stay ahead of demand for its wide range of polyamide compounds. This line is already running at close to capacity. As a result, the company is now in advanced planning for a fourth line, to be installed in 2017. All Nilit lines use European compounding technologies.

Nilit continues to buck the trend in China with continuous sales growth that is well into double-digits; by contrast, the domestic market as a whole is probably shrinking. The government-compiled manufacturing purchasing manager's index (PMI) was below 50 (indicating negative market sentiment) every month between July 2015 and February 2016, and only climbed back into positive territory in March.

“Nilit is probably the only company producing polyamide compounds in China to have registered unbroken growth in the last few years,” says Kastoriano. “We are selling much more into the automotive industry now, and we are gaining shares in several markets with new projects. We are doing strong business with local Chinese companies and with subsidiaries of multinationals.”

Kastoriano points out that Nilit Plastics already has over 80 grades, engineered for electrical and electronic applications, certified by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for their flame resistance. An increasing number of compounds also have UL Yellow Cards, which provide proof that materials have passed certain tests relating to fire resistance. In addition, Nilit Plastics has numerous products approved by the German VDE Testing and Certification Institute.

“Nilit Plastics has established a strong reputation in China as a reliable partner for production of high quality materials, many of them certified by independent authorities for demanding applications,” says Kastoriano. “In recent months, we have extended the scope of Yellow Cards for several FRIANYL compounds, so that they now show the improved properties in terms of the thickness they achieve the UL94 V-0 rating, and also the Relative Temperature Index, RTI.” RTI indicates the maximum temperature at which a material can be used without specific properties being compromised. In addition, several NILAMID XS compounds have obtained Yellow Cards for the first time.

Improved ratings for flame retardant compounds and compounds for water-contact applications

One key grade in the FRIANYL XT series, FRIANYL XT4 GF30 V0I, recently obtained a V-0 rating under the UL 94 flammability standard, for thicknesses down to 0.4 mm and for all colours. “This listing will now allow our customers to apply FRIANYL XT4 GF30 V0I compounds in an even broader spectrum of applications than before in the electronics industry, where the mechanical and electrical performance of increasingly small parts has to be retained at elevated temperatures,”says Kastoriano.

Nilit Plastics is active in applications for the white goods industry as well. Two compounds, both based on polyamide 66 reinforced with 30% glass fibre, have recently obtained independent certification from European authorities for use in products such as electro-valves for washing machines, dishwashers and the like that come into contact with drinking water. “These new certifications will be valuable for our customers in obtaining approvals for their products from major OEMs in the white goods industry,” says Kastoriano.
